I’d heard this song with my ears for a couple of months before I heard it in my soul.
I’d been struggling with a situation that had left me hurt, angry, and feeling unloved. I kept bringing it to the foot of the cross, then picking it back up again.
I truly wanted to make peace with the situation, but Satan had gotten a foothold and I couldn’t seem to get out of his grip.
“Why?” I asked the Lord, when my heart still felt ripped in two. I’d written about resolution and turning things over to God about this very same situation. I thought my heart had finally given it all to Him.
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Jeremiah 17:9
I was pulling into a WalMart grocery pickup spot when He answered. (Time and space often stand still when He speaks, and I remember exact details.)
“You’re enjoying the pity party,” He said.
What?! No!! I’ve worked too hard to get out of that mindset. I didn’t want to believe Him, but when He speaks, He speaks truth. I had to acknowledge I didn’t know my own heart.
Then I had to take responsibility for my thoughts.
“I don’t want to be upset over this. I want to say I’ve given it to You, and know I’ve left it there. I don’t want to hurt anymore,” I prayed.
Then I went home, unloaded groceries, and went about my day. The next morning I woke up to a song playing in my soul.
🎶 Make it well with my soul
I need a peace that only heaven knows
Jesus, could you please
Just sit and cry with me
‘Til I can sing 🎶
I knew exactly what that was about. The Lord was delivering me from the devil’s grip. It was a situation I hadn’t created—but one I hadn’t guarded against either. With the lyrics was a supernatural peace and I knew I’d been set free.
The title is the only prayer you need. Make it well…
Make It Well (MercyMe, 2026)
Make it well with my soul
When the storm is raging, please don’t let me go
Oh, voice that calms the sea
Keep whispering to me
So I can sing…
It is well with my soul…
Whatever my lot
You are still my God
It is well
It is well with my soul
