Thought I’d share one of my favorite lessons this year. Learning to hold joy and pain simultaneously.

I’m so excited for this baby shower for my son and daughter-in-law. Sherri did some amazing decorating as usual, and I did the games and attempted made-from-scratch brownies. Pulling out containers Mom labeled, remembering childhood lessons on separating egg yolks…her presence is felt every step of the way.

But she’s not here. And she should be. I had to sit down and tell myself not to cry. She’d be rolling her eyes at me.

“Daughter, you’ve got to stop wearing your heart on your sleeve,” she’d say. If she told me that once, she told me a million times.

It’s painful—knowing she’s not here. She wanted a great-granddaughter more than anything in the world. She had such dreams for their time together.

But she would not want a happy occasion to be turned into mourning. She’d probably be mad at us, to tell the truth!

And I don’t want to be sad. This is a happy occasion! I feel the joy in every balloon, every hand that’s helping celebrate a new life.

It’s joy…mixed with a little pain.

And joy from the Lord cannot be squelched!
