Media Monday: Never Get Used to This

This song speaks to me on many levels.

In one way there’s a literal interpretation of my life today.

🎶 I’ll never get used to this
I’ll never get used to this
This is how I want to live
Forever we’ll be singing like, “Oh”
I’ll never get used to this
🎶

As I left town last week for a seven-week road trip, my dad had slipped a note in my car. “Go enjoy your best life.”

It is truly a life made up of my wildest dreams. I don’t know that I’ll ever get used to the fact that the Lord has indeed fulfilled the long-held desires of my heart. (Psalm 37:4)

But there’s a much deeper meaning to these lyrics. Even more than delighting yourself in the Lord, there’s deliverance.

🎶 I was stuck inside that grave a long time
Didn’t think I’d make it through those long nights
But You never late, You always on time
Remember when You got me out that?
You got me out that
🎶

This is about so much more than getting used to a new way of life. It’s about living again.

I hear people say it all the time: I’m just existing. I go to work and come home. I am not really living.

I understand them.
Because I was them.

I existed for three solid years. I spent at least 2 of them lying in bed, relishing illnesses that gave me an excuse to sleep away a life I no longer wanted to live. I wasn’t deep in sin. But I was in a man-made grave, buried by the dirt of regrets and sorrow.

Becoming alive again feels like a gift. I don’t want to get used to it, because if I do, I might take it for granted.

I want to spend every day in awe of a Creator who raised me up, set my feet on a rock, and taught me how to live again.

Never Get Used to This (Forrest Frank and JVKE, 2024)

From the mornin’ to the evenin’
I could sing Your praise all day
From the prison to the garden
You’re the God who’s breakin’ chains
When I look back
On my whole life
There’s a silver lining of grace
