Media Monday: Do Something

There’s one line in Matthew West’s song Do Something that gets me every time.

After lamenting the tragedies of the world, he shakes his fist at Heaven and says, “God, why don’t you do something?”

God’s reply was simple: “I did. I created YOU.”

The line fills me with pride, warmth, and occasionally fear at once. He’s right. The Bible is filled with great men and women of God who didn’t sit around and just pray for God to deliver their people. They put boots on the ground.

Sometimes we get into such a spiritual mindset that we expect all change to occur while we are sitting alone in our prayer closets. But the Lord calls us to action too.

We don’t have to march around the walls of Jericho, but we do have to be mindful of where He’s placed us.

There have been times I had the fire of Jeremiah, speaking His words to a crowd. Other times all I could do was fall flat on my face and reach for the hem of His garment.

Bigger isn’t always better. Obedience is key.

I am reminded of a poem floating around during the pandemic. The writer shared how we shouldn’t be worried for our children because they were born into a different world than the one we were raised in, but to understand that they were created for such a time as this. (Esther 4:14)

It was a profound reminder that the Lord equips us for whatever situation we face, and creates us for a divine purpose.

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. Proverbs 19:21

Wherever we are in life, it is never too late to DO SOMETHING for Christ.

Do Something (Matthew West, 2012)

I’m so tired of talking
About how we are God’s hands and feet
But it’s easier to say than to be
Live like angels of apathy who tell ourselves

“It’s alright — somebody else will do something.”
Well, I don’t know about you
But I’m sick and tired of life with no desire
I don’t want a flame, I want a fire
I wanna be the one who stands up and says,
“I’m gonna do something”
