Nothin’ Sweeter grabs me from the very first line.
🎶 There’s been so many times I got it so wrong
And a couple that I got it just right
That was me, in a nutshell. I’d earnestly try, but miss the mark over and over.
There were times I got it right though. But I made one colossal mistake every time. I stopped guarding myself, certain that I’d “arrived” and would never misstep again.
I forgot about 1 Peter 5:8:
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.
In the TobyMac hit, he sings of being on top of the world and by the bitter graveside. Of being in the darkness and being in the light. Of being uptown and being downtown.
The metaphors show the juxtaposition of every believer. We all live with a sense of duality — the paradoxical journey of being a Christian in a fallen world. But whether we are on a mountain or in a valley, one thing is certain: He never lets us go.
🎶 I’ve seen some prayers get answered, and I’ve heard my share of no’s
But there’s never been a moment that You let me go…
In Verse 2, we hear that many of us are alumni of the same place.
🎶 I graduated from the school o’ hard knocks
But there’s some lessons that I haven’t quite learned
I learned most of my lessons the hard way. Sometimes I still do. The Lord will give you the same lesson over and over until you master it. As much as I strive for perfection, I know there are some lessons I haven’t quite conquered.
But in it all — the successes and the failures— I know that there is nothing sweeter than His love.
🎶 In the good times, through thе hard times
Filled my pockets full of sunshinе
I’ve seen so much of the good stuff
But there ain’t nothin’ sweeter than His love
Nothin’ Sweeter (TobyMac, 2024)
I’ve been uptown, I’ve been downtown
In the spotlight, I’ve been broke down
I’ve seen so much, might not know much
But there ain’t nothin’ sweeter than His love
You don’t have to bat a thousand to live wrapped in perfect love. If your track record looks a little… mixed (welcome to the club), take a breath.
God doesn’t conduct a performance review before pouring out His grace. Stay alert. Stay surrendered.
And the next time the enemy tries to replay your greatest hits of messing up, just smile and remind yourself what’s still true — there has never been, and will never be, anything sweeter than His love.
