Sitting on my balcony overlooking the Gulf this morning, I noticed the fish. Like a Whack-a-Mole game, they made their appearance all over the surface in rapid-fire succession.
Quite like the game’s hammer, birds would swoop down and gobble them up. Why on earth would you make yourself easy prey? I wondered. I googled the answer to my own question before the Lord showed me a clear picture:
We are the fish.
We swim through life, often teetering near the edge where Satan can grab us with his teeth. We, too, have our reasons for nearing the surface despite its dangers, but we leave ourselves exposed nonetheless. Some of us manage to escape below after a scare. Some never even sense danger, making it easier to reemerge again. Some won’t make it through—the consequences deadly.
Even for us, it’s true that danger lurks all around. Staying submerged comes with its own perils. But there’s a secret force field we can stay in while swimming to our heart’s content: the Holy Spirit. The predators may swim all around us, their menacing glares in full view. But like an aquarium glass wall, they can go no further to cause us harm.
And the Spirit doesn’t only protect—it provides clarity like clean water, direction like a steady current, and nourishment like oxygen in every breath. Within His presence, we aren’t just safe; we’re fully alive.
That’s what walking in the Spirit is. It’s swimming with the sharks, limbs remaining fully intact. As Galatians 5:25 says, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
When we walk in the Spirit, the predators lose their power, and the water becomes a place of peace, not fear.
