I’d just pulled through to get my order of 2 bags of ice at a Sonic drive-through when I heard this song for the first time. The lyrics hit deep and the tone felt like something that had come from deep within. I didn’t dare turn it down when I reached the carhop pick-up spot. I couldn’t.
It was a rallying cry and it called all believers to join at once.
“Get thee behind me, Satan!” Jesus spoke these words to Peter when he was operating in the wrong spirit just as we should speak to anything and everything the devil throws in our way.
I particularly love the line: You’re stuck under my blood-bought boots.
While the line refers to Satan being under our feet (Romans 16:20) and that we were bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20) I can’t help but picture a poisonous snake stomped to its death by a pair of heavy duty, steel-toe cowboy boots splattered with the snake’s blood as it lies there dead.
Maybe that’s macabre, but Satan has gleefully danced atop many a grave he’d buried me alive in. Turnabout is fair play.
I spoke briefly with Emerson Day a few weeks ago. She’s coming to the Monroe Civic Center- about two hours from my house- on Oct. 23 with Jordan St. Cyr as part of Micah Tyler’s God Did It tour. The breakout summer 2025 hit will undoubtedly see her touring for years to come. She’s been amazed at what the Lord has done with this song.
This week’s focus is on putting those things that worry or anger you behind you. Facing Satan and telling him he has lost the battle for your heart, your mind, and your soul. When you clear the path in front of you so that your vision is on God and God alone, your world becomes much brighter. When you claim the victory that is rightfully yours against the devil, you become so much stronger.
Get Behind Me, Emerson Day (2025)
Devil, get behind me, run on home
Back to the grave where you belong
In case you forgot, let me tell you the truth
You’re stuck under my blood-bought boots
Devil, get behind me, you’ve got no hold
I’ve been changed by the Holy Ghost
Try all you want but it ain’t no use
You’re stuck under my blood-bought boots
