Name that Tune

I grew up watching Name That Tune with my mom in the 70’s.

“Tom, I can name that tune in seven notes,” a contestant would say. It was fun to see whether or not they could actually guess the song title from just a few notes.

My son and I used to play this in the car often, in the days before aux cords allowed playlists to go through our car’s speakers or
digital radios announced the song titles. We’d listen to a song, seeing who could correctly identify it first. I knew 90’s country.

As the years went on, my musical lyric repertoire grew and I could name every Eagles, Disney, Taylor Swift, Aerosmith, Barney, Guns-N-Roses, Miranda Lambert, and Broadway musical tune in five notes or less.

I even had a short stint where I could name that tune on most female rap songs, deciding I was going to be the Christian Cardi B. Ready to throw hands with my enemies, I forgot Ephesians 6:12:

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

My heart and mind settled when I began feeding them with the nourishment of gospel music. I replaced revenge songs with uplifting words that reminded me I was Wonderfully Made. I started each day going Higher with Confidence. Chaos at night was quieted with Peace Be Still.

Originally with a playlist of about 20 modern Christian hits, my set list grew to nearly 100 faith-filled tunes. They now play when I’m getting dressed, when I’m driving, and when I’m cleaning the house.

Today, while running errands, I had the radio on 104.3 The Bridge instead of my playlist. I like listening to the radio sometimes because I always discover new worship songs to add to my repertoire.

Each song played less than three chords before I knew exactly what song it was. Name that Tune for Christian music, I thought.

Now that’s a game show I’d love to go on!
