I left the Trainwreck Inn in Grand Coteau around 8 AM yesterday, having quickly gotten up and loaded the car to grab breakfast (ever had a Scotch egg?!) before arriving at the school show of Omnium Circus in Lafayette.
I came home afterward, stopping to run several errands including a grocery pickup. After putting the groceries away and unloading my car, it was time to head to Buckets for our monthly Sunday School/Lifegroup dinner out. Good food and great fellowship in the Lord.
I came home and started unpacking and answering emails, working til a little after midnight. The minute I turned the light off, it hit me. I hadn’t read my Bible at all today.
This isn’t necessarily a daily requirement- thought it is good practice- but I’d made a commitment to the Lord to read and journal a passage daily while finishing my book. So it WAS a requirement for me.
I don’t take my commitments to the Lord lightly.
The bag with my Bible and journal was downstairs so I read a passage from Bible Gateway on my phone instead. (I love this app because it has multiple translations as well.)
When I woke up this morning, the temptation to hit the ground running was there as usual. I always read my devotion first, learning long ago to keep it in the bathroom.
But God deserves more than just a daily devotion from us. Imagine being in a relationship with someone where you send a good morning text each day and have zero interaction after. How long will that relationship last?
I made myself slow down and go sit on the swing, Bible in hand. I read a passage and took time to meditate and pray after. We don’t just need to talk to Him. We need to LISTEN to Him.
He is the one who makes all of our paths straight. (Isaiah 45:2) But we must sit still long enough to receive the directions.
If reading a daily devotion and Bible study are just items in your daily checklist, you have the right concept but you are missing the power of the Word. Take time to meditate on it. (Joshua 1:8) Listen to what God says back when you pray.
If the desire is there but you feel like you just don’t have enough time in your day, make time. You find time for the things you love. (Matthew 6:21). Wake up 15 minutes early, binge-watch one less episode of your current streaming fave and pick up your Bible instead, or use my hack and keep a devotional in the bathroom!
We always make time for those we love. The question is, do you love the Lord?
