Your actions matter. But what about your thoughts?

My Bible reading this morning found me in Proverbs 15. It was a good passage for me. It only reminded me a zillion times that a tempered tongue and gentle guidance is better than a fiery delivery.

When the Lord repeats something that many times, you know it’s important!

It was a good reminder both for my writing and for interacting with others. I know I can still be a little feisty.

I was joyfully reading along, feeling encouraged not admonished, when I got to verse 26.

The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord, but gracious words are pure.

While I don’t count myself among the wicked, I know my thoughts sometimes are. And I don’t get a free pass because I’m a Christian.

My wicked thoughts are an abomination to the Lord. It doesn’t matter that I keep my mouth shut when I want to call out someone’s sin. It doesn’t matter that I extend grace when others sin against me.

My actions- even when I DO the right thing- are still wrong when my heart entertains those evil thoughts.

Who hasn’t fantasized about their enemies facing a great downfall? Who doesn’t want the light to shine on the shadiness of someone who did you wrong?

These are natural, human emotions.

Which is why we are reminded in Romans 7:18 that in the flesh is no good thing.

In Jeremiah 29:11, God says, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you…thoughts of peace and not of evil…

Our thoughts toward others should be the same.

If we are truly be Christ-like, we must match Him with not just our actions, but our thoughts as well.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus. Philippians 2:5
