In Matthew 8, Jesus is asleep in the boat when a violent storm arises. The disciples are afraid and beg Him to save them. His answer, a calm assurance that He is in control of every storm, convinces them to stay in the boat.
Watching the sun rise over Lake Hamilton this morning reminded me of a time I was in the midst of my own treacherous storm. It seemed Jesus was asleep in my life as well and I cried out for a miraculous rescue.
Instead He showed me a quiet sunrise.
Arriving at dawn on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico after yet another sleepless night, I obeyed the nudge to snap a series of photos. I ended up with four photos taken from the exact same vantage point.
“Wow that’s cool,” I’d whispered, noticing the contrast.
“No, that’s hope,” He whispered back.
I understood immediately. I hadn’t moved, yet darkness had given way to light. No matter where I was in my journey, joy would come in the morning. (Psalm 30:5)
It is a picture I held onto in my heart for the next year as my life was thrown into total chaos. The was the promise of daybreak, of hope, hidden deep within that told me no matter how things looked, a new day would come.
If it seems like Jesus is asleep on you, stay in the boat anyway. You may be the master of your fate, but He is the Captain of your soul.
