Once when ministering to a group of alcoholics and addicts, I shared that God speaks to me through my dogs. After noticing the mixed looks of amusement and horror, I realized I could’ve worded that differently.
The dogs do not speak to me but rather I often have an epiphany while observing them.
Such was the case today.
I’d handed Amora, aka my Little Sister, a piece of week-old pizza while I dug the ham hock out of the fridge from Dad’s mustard greens last weekend.
She’d gone off to chew her crust just a few feet away when I started calling her to get the bone.
She refused to turn toward me. I called her louder and louder. I spoke sharply. I spoke sweetly. I stomped my foot.
She would not look up, so intent in devouring every leftover crumb of that stale pizza crust that she could not see I was holding something she’d have enjoyed so much more.
Immediately I understood the picture. We do that so often with the Lord. We won’t tear ourselves away from the meagerly crumbs the world gives us to even notice the feast He’s holding out in His hand if we would just turn our eyes toward Him.
I wanted to chunk it in the trash at one point, frustrated at her stubbornness. But, like our Father above, I loved her too much to withhold good from her. I waited til she was done and came over to me on her own. I might’ve waited a little less patiently though!
What about you? Are you settling for dried up, flavorless crust when the Lord is trying to give you a juicy hambone?
Turn your eyes to Him and see what He is holding for you.
Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Psalm 34:8
